First day of the year

Today I was excited to go for a walk up to Piazzale Michelangiolo. The sun was out and the skies were clear. The minute I walked out of our apartment, I was surrounded by people. The lungarno was filled with people strolling toward the centro (downtown center area): Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo. I walked in the opposite direction toward Ponte San Niccolò to head up the viale (large avenue).

Living in Florence :: First day of the year

I brought along my camera and took a few photos along the way. When I arrived at the Piazzale Michelangiolo, I didn’t go all around as I normally would. It was probably the most crowded I’ve ever seen it in the morning. I certainly don’t blame them, the year started out with one of the most beautiful days we’ve seen in a while.

I walked down the rampe (ramps), through the small wooded area, and down to the Porta di San Niccolò. I, of course, loved the view of the Duomo in the distance although the sky was a little hazy toward the mountains. What I loved even more was the Arno today.

The reflection of the buildings across the Arno was spectacular. Without much wind, the water was still and acted like a mirror. I took some photos of the Arno because I just couldn’t keep my eyes off of it.

It was odd to see the city so busy when everything except a few bars and restaurants were open. People milled around enjoying the sun and the city. I too enjoyed walking around myself to take in the city. It was a perfect beginning to a new year.
